The FSJ Minor Hockey Board of Directors recently attended the District Engagement meeting with BC Hockey to discuss various topics such as Atom Pathway. In preparation for the upcoming 2020/21 implementation of the Atom Pathway, the Board made a decision to review the Atom Program. The Board reviewed our existing policies, practices, history, competitive balance and coaching resources. During the 2018/19 season our Atom Program formed two Development teams (“A” & “B”) who participated in the Alberta All Peace League. The remaining 5 Recreation teams played in the North East Rural Hockey League (NERHL) which consisted of Atom Recreation teams from within the Peace River District Zone including FSJ, Fort Nelson, Dawson Creek, Clearview, Taylor, Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge and Hudson’s Hope. For the upcoming 2019/2020 season FSJMHA will continue with the Atom “A” Development team, which will again participate in the All Peace League. Tryouts for this season’s Atom Development team will be mirroring the Atom Pathway program. The remainder of the Atom registered players will be evaluated and FSJMHA will create even teams to participate in the NERHL. FSJMHA Female Director will be meeting with female players who are Atom age and make a decision on the possibility of a female Atom Recreation team. The board decided to make this change to create a deeper player talent pool in the Recreational division and generate higher competition within the NERHL. There is also an opportunity to add experienced coaches to our Recreation group. Change is always difficult and always has its challenges. Our membership has the ability to embrace this change and create a positive hockey experience for our players. The NERHL is a newly reestablished and improving league that will benefit our whole region and we need volunteers to continue to grow and support it.
