The Huskies fill the bus food drive for the Salvation Army food bank which takes place on December 2, 2018. We normally collect around 20,000 pounds of food which is a very significant portion of the Salvation Army’s yearly requirements. The Huskies have conducted this food drive for in excess of fifteen years and have provided more than $250,000 to the Salvation Army in food bank donations over the years.
To accomplish this worthwhile cause, the Huskies rely on volunteers from the community. The main areas where help is required is in the door to door collection of the food and then the sorting and boxing of the food which takes place at the North Peace Arena. We need help primarily in two areas. Firstly, we need drivers who have a vehicle and they would take a couple of Husky players or minor hockey players to an assigned part of town and the players would go door to door and collect the food for delivery by the driver to the arena. Secondly we need help at the arena sorting and boxing the food at the arena.
This takes about 4 hours of time to collect up to 10 tons of food. If we get enough help it is not that onerous of a job and it makes a huge contribution to our community.
In addition to the volunteer effort, businesses can contribute to the cause through a donation of supplies or money which will be used to purchase items for the food bank.
